Sep 17, 05
Well the Lions got a convincing win over Cincy and now have two wins! The team seems to be jelling and gaining confidence, but what do these two wins tell us about our Nittany Lions. The caliber of some of the non-conference teams is many times questionable, so the little lion wonders about what these mean and is still looking for the "sign" that 2005 will be a good season. JoePa reiterates his non-belief in signs and his "catch phrase" on how to look at a season. The little lion WANTS a sign, though. I think that represents all of us Nittany Lion fans and how big of an impact Lion football has on all of our falls (autumns) over the years. It used to be a given that a bad season for us was 7-4 with a non-New Year's day bowl; but now a whole new reality has been cast upon us and we're all a little hesitant to believe.
Posted by: Lions Tale Artist on Sep 17, 05 | 6:13 am

Sep 24, 05
Well we have our three non-conference wins and it's time to go on the road and start the Big Ten with a match up against the Northwestern Wildcats. The Nittany Lion prepares to go on the road by packing for the trip ... packing the success so far and hoping it is what he (and we) need to go further. As he shakes his full case the little lion wonders what these wins really tell us and how substantial they are. The Little Lion is still looking for the sign that everything will be OK this season, but he (and we) still don't have it. JoePa, as always, doesn't believe in such things ... even though others do. So the Nittany Lion faces the first Big Ten opponent and wonders how big of a test it will be; as does the Little Lion who sees Northwestern's collapse against a big time team as an indication that the first Big Ten game may be more like the non-conference ones that started the season ... and we'll remain without a "sign".
Posted by: Lions Tale Artist on Sep 24, 05 | 3:44

Oct 01, 05
Wow four wins and that seems great, but I think that we're all looking for that overwhelming sign that the Nittany Lions are going to be able to power down the field in ANY game and win or have a darned good chance to - and the Little Lion is looking for the same thing. We saw a lot of good things in the Northwestern game, but we also saw a number of miscues that made the Lions have to make "a correction" to win the game. The Little Lion drives himself frantic as he weighs all of the factors trying to figure out what sign we have ... to no avail. Just like us he sees some good and some things to be concerned about and the lack of a consistent feel for this team leaves us all a little uneasy ... how long will this last before we face a big letdown? JoePa, of course, continues not to believe in signs and doesn't stray from a typically JoePa philosophy. The Nittany Lion and the Golden Gopher eye each other up both thinking that the other's undefeated state is something that's g

Oct 02, 05
Wow great game! Almost like what I had described as the sign-worthy win in the last entry! Well put together, well done and a lot of great effort and execution by the Nittany Lions. It looks like the Nittany Lions that we had gotten used to before the last few years may just be back. We finally got to see them put together all of talents we knew they had. And I'll bet that we ascend out of the "others getting votes" category to a real ranking. What will be in the cartoon for this week? Not quite sure yet, but it may involve one little guy getting what he's wanted for so long and trying to see if indeed it is real...
Posted by: Lions Tale Artist on Oct 02, 05 7:48 pm

Oct 08, 05
We are all constantly on a quest for one thing or another and a little lion thinks he found his. After the "complete defeat" of the Minnesota Golden Gophers, the Little Lion thinks he has what he has waited for: a sign that everything's going to be OK this season ... and the Nittany Lions we know (and love) are back. This kind of reflects how we all now are very close to complete faith in our Nittany Lions' ability after this win. The complete mastery of the field by the Lions against a good team is what we've been waiting to see and didn't really see in the first four wins. But we all wonder if this can continue into the next game and hope it wasn't a one time thing. The Little Lion decides to test the sign and see it's true power, asking for a little assistance in defeating #6 Ohio State. JoePa states some standard dialog relative to big games (similar to what he said in his Tuesday press conference); and the Nittany Lion knows that it's never that simple - especially now.

Oct 09, 05
Again wow! Wonderful job, Lions! It's gratifying to see the National Press stumbling over themselves about a program they considered over along with its coach! Hey JOE MUST KNOW how to play football. And it was quite gratifying to hand the rated buckeyes a loss after three years of trying (PSU students - fantastic job on the "white out"). Oh I wanted another touchdown to make sure Beavis fate was sealed earlier in the game, but with defense like ours we really didn't need it! For this week's cartoon there are a number of things I want to include: a sign that's grown stronger, a little lion that believes, a wolverine team we haven't beaten in six tries, and a look at the only undefeated Big Ten team (Penn State!) and how our first two Big Ten wins may be a ANOTHER sign of things to come. Hey Lions, it's nice to be "back"!
Posted by: Lions Tale Artist on Oct 09, 05 | 8:38 am

Oct 15, 05
The Sign has proved itself to be real after the win over (formerly #6) Ohio State; and now the Nittany Lions are ranked No. 8. It has taken on the appearance of a totem pole with the losing opponents frozen on this gold treasure. If the sign is real, the Little Lion theorizes that the Nittany Lions must be real; and if that is true ... well then .... WE ARE BACK! The two lions rejoice in this major revealation. Our poor little lion has been wanting to believe in Penn State football for a while (take a peek back at the 2003 Ohio State cartoon), and now that it's back he's a believer again (and I don't think that he's alone)!

The Little Lion then tries to apply a little logic to the other events of that week for Big Ten team. Northwestern and Minnesota may have certainly been better than originally thought and our Lions may have been more well matched at Northwestern than we thought. Northwestern beat undefeated Wisconsin; and Minnesota beat Michigan at Ann Arbor - both results wer

At the end to feel so excited and within in a few seconds (two given back to be precise) to feel so, so empty. It all started out slow, but as the end approached, the Lions encountered new situations and adapted and we all thought we had finally broken the Michigan jinx (in the next reality kick the ball back to Michigan as a low wobbler...!). The Lions were always in the game and were just cheated at the end, but nothing that would make us stop believing ... but that doesn't stop the empty pain! Over time we will all get past in, but for now the disgust liners (over the situation, not the team). The next cartoon ... I'm just not sure at this point but I want to capture some feeling of the result (empty, disgust, etc.). At times like this it is the hardest to do a cartoon because in doing one after a game like this, it keeps the feeling of loss fresh in your mind and you don't just move past it to the next game. Sep 09, 06
Like a kid waiting on a scrumptious desert, we all anxiously await the answer as to whether our Lions are ready for the rigors of 2006, and the game against Notre Dame. So I've used this concept of ready to look at what you get with the proper amount of time and what you get if you're too quick to action. (I had another great idea from a great friend about the Little Lion confusing the leprechaun with the Travel Gnome from TV - like he does with Brutus Buckeye's name - but it was a little too much to fit in so maybe for next year .... my friend will get a jab at his Notre Dame loving sister.) So our little lion looks at some things that are really great - when they are ready - and what you get if you proceed too soon. Have we scheduled this game too soon and will the Lions be ready? Well, Nittany Lion, you better jump up and shake Fate and Destiny's hands as they come to greet you. I'm not a big ND fan - so I REALLY hope we're ready!
Posted by: Lions Tale Artist on Sep 09, 06 | 5:2

Sep 16, 06
Well, guess what - we weren't ready for Notre Dame and now all of us Lion fans are questioning the momentum from the Glory of 2005 carrying over into 2006. This week the Nittany Lion refers back to the previous cartoon where in the last panel the Little Lion asks "Are we ready?" and goes through the politeness of trying to reply when we all know what the answer to that question is. They politely dance around each other until the Little Lion blows a gasket about the result of the game and goes then goes on to bemoan the peril we may be in as we approach a visit to Beavis in Columbus.

This week we face the Division 1AA "Get that 12th Game" Penguins of Youngstown State. YSU's mascot is Pete Penguin, but I wanted to go the "March of the Penguins" route and have a pile of penguins there (always a good thought, but can get tedious as you ink all of the little suckers in!). Of course the Nittany Lion has to ask which one is Pete, and of course they all say

The Little Lion ponders the No. 1 ranked Buckeye and of course when dealing with Ohio State there are two givens. One is that the mysterious wondrous buckeye that tops Ohio\'s pantheon is really no more that what we call in Pennsylvania a horse chestnut. The other is at some point Brutus will be called Beavis. It\'s Ohio State and it\'s just gonna happen. Ohio State remains unbeaten, even though they were not always dominant in all of their wins, but they have the momentum an we\'re in Columbus for the game. So currently College Football is awash in Buckeyes and it is our task to drain this flood. The Nittany Lion, JoePa and the Little Lion are perched on a tiny bit of land in a buckeye deluge trying to find out how deep this flood is. JoePa is of the the mind that you jump in and your skill will keep you afloat or allow you to sink below the surface ... but you just have to jump in. Like last week when we had a pile of penguins, we have a sea of horse chestnuts (without the little anthropomorp

Oct 28, 06
This week's effort has several facets that are normally seen at some point in the football editorial cartooning season. It is a "review" in that we see specifically (as opposed to a little flag with the season record on it) what has happened so far in the season and a "projection" in we see what is left to finish the season. We have a tie into Halloween, which is normally done in one way or another. Finally we have a general editorial comment as to how the season is proceeding to date. Let's start with this one. In many venues and conversations so far this year, it eventually comes out that Penn State can pick the "low hanging fruit" on the schedule, but not the ones higher up (or harder to pick). This seemed like a good theme to base the cartoon on, and I was reminded of a cartoon I did in 2003 (http://www.alionstale.com/psu/2003/game/wisconsin/index.html) that was similar, but not quite the same in the thought of harvest from one location. So we have &q

This week\'s effort has several facets that are normally seen at some point in the football editorial cartooning season. It is a \"review\" in that we see specifically (as opposed to a little flag with the season record on it) what has happened so far in the season and a \"projection\" in we see what is left to finish the season. We have a tie into Halloween, which is normally done in one way or another. Finally we have a general editorial comment as to how the season is proceeding to date. Let\'s start with this one. So we have \"The Tree of 2006\".

To tie into Halloween,
